You might assume dogs will happily eat almost anything offered to them. But if you’ve spent enough time around them, you know that’s not always the case. Some pups become tiny food critics with very specific preferences. One Golden Retriever recently showed in an Instagram video just how picky he can be when it comes to apples.

According to her, Bentley will only eat apples if they are served with peanut butter. To prove her point, she decides to demonstrate the difference on camera.
First, she offers Bentley a plain slice of apple. The dog takes it in his mouth briefly but almost immediately drops it to the floor. The reaction makes it clear that the plain fruit simply does not meet his standards. To make sure viewers understand this isn’t just a one-time reaction, she tries again. This time, Bentley only sniffs the apple slice and refuses to take it at all. The Golden Retriever looks unimpressed, as if he knows exactly what is missing.
Then comes the real test. The owner spreads peanut butter onto another slice of apple before offering it to Bentley again. This time, the change in his reaction is instant. Bentley eagerly grabs the slice and begins chewing it with enthusiasm, clearly satisfied with the improved version of the snack.
As he finishes the treat, Bentley even paws at his owner as if asking for another piece. His confident reaction shows that peanut butter is the key ingredient that turns a simple apple into something worth eating. Meanwhile, the on-screen text humorously reads, “Having a picky dog is so funny, like why did you split that apple like that.”
If you’ve ever given your dog peanut butter, Bentley’s reaction probably doesn’t surprise you. Most pups absolutely love it. Peanut butter is rich in fats and protein, and its strong smell makes it especially appealing to their sensitive noses. The thick texture also keeps them busy licking, which many dogs find satisfying.
That said, it’s important to give peanut butter in moderation. Always check the label to make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs. A small spoonful as an occasional treat or spread on fruit like apples can be perfectly safe for most dogs.
